Introduction We are very grateful to Sam Harris for allowing us to publish extracts from his excellent unpublished account of his time as a navigator with 576 Squadron at Elsham Wolds. Sam was the navigator in the crew of Pilot Officer Ken Murray. They were posted to 576 Squadron at the end of 1943 and completed a very demanding tour of 30 operations on the 7th June 1944. The crew were all British and consisted of: Pilot: Pilot Officer K C Murray, "Ken" Flight Engineer: Sergeant K McKenzie, "Mac" Navigator: Flight Sergeant H S T Harris, "Sam" Air Bomber: Sergeant D J White, "Chalky" Wireless Operator: Sergeant R Luffman, "Luff" Mid Upper Gunner: Sergeant E Page, "Eric" Rear Gunner: Sergeant H Wynn, "Bert" At the end of their tour the crew was split up and went their seperate ways. Thankfully all 7 survived the war. Sam now lives in retirement in Keighley, West Yorkshire, England. | |
